Phylecia Platte – Assistant Director                                                      

Phylecia Platte worked for 20 years as a computing professional, both as a computer systems programmer and as a manager. Phylecia’s final position in the technology field was as Manager of Distributed Computing and Scientific Visualization in the Scientific Computing Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder.

Phylecia Platte’s second career was in the home construction industry. Phylecia and her late husband, Brian Platte, were two of the three founders of Apex Mountain Homes, LLC in Summit County, Colorado, and Phylecia was the managing partner until 2005. Phylecia was also a real estate broker and the owner and managing broker of a Colorado real estate company. Phylecia and Brian moved to Maui in 2005. Although semi-retired, they started Apex Maui Homes as a single family home builder. Phylecia managed this company until early 2012.

Phylecia joined Rotary in 2009, and has helped with RYLA every year, and is now serving as the RYLA Maui Assistant Director and as the Rotary D5000 RYLA Chair.

Joanne Laird – Director                                                               

Joanne Laird was an educator for 32 years.  She was State President of California Association of Directors of Activities in 1990-91; she was chair of the CADA State Convention held in Reno in 1990.   She was the Area B Coordinator and she served on the state board for 8 years.  She was a junior high teacher and activities director for 16 years.  She ended her career in education by being the Assistant Principal at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino for 15 years, her major area of responsibility being student activities and athletics.  She was named the Assistant Principal of the Year for California by McDonald’s and NASSP in 1998.  She was the Co-Chair of the NASC 2000 national leadership conference, which was held at Monta Vista High School in June of 2000.

Since retirement and moving to Maui in July, 2003, Joanne and her husband Larry have conducted student leadership workshops on the Hawai’ian Islands and have trained over 6000 student leaders.  Both became members of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise in 2005 and both have been Club Presidents.  Joanne and Larry assumed responsibility for Maui RYLA from 2005-2011, and 2013 to 2015.  Joanne served as the Assistant District Governor for 4 Maui Rotary Clubs from 2012 to 2014 and serves as  Director for Maui RYLA 2015.
